Skylight Warranty Coverage in Maryland & Virginia

Two stacked warranties. JDH covers installation workmanship for 5 years from the install completion date, fully transferable - curb framing accuracy, flashing kit installation, deck integration, ice and water barrier under the flashing, fastening, sealant, and solar component mounting. VELUX's No Leak Promise overlays on top for the original owner: 10 years on installation/flashing, 20 years on glass seal, 10 years on product (frame, sash, flashing), and 5 years on solar components and shades. JDH files VELUX claims on your behalf during the 5-year window.

JDH's skylight portfolio is intentionally narrowed to solar-powered VELUX skylights and solar attic vents. Solar-powered units are self-contained: no electrical wiring through the roof or interior, no hardwiring during install, and they qualify for the federal solar tax credit on the unit and install (when applicable). Electric/hardwired skylights add wiring complexity that pulls in electrical sub-trades, increases install cost, and adds failure points outside JDH's direct workmanship control. By installing solar units only, JDH keeps the install fully owned by our team and the warranty chain clean.

No - and this is an important carve-out specific to skylights. Skylight installs (whether replacing an existing unit or cutting a new opening) are inherently invasive on the interior side. Any interior cosmetic damage caused by the install work itself - drywall around the curb opening, paint, ceiling texture, trim, drop-ceiling tile displacement, finish-out impact at the ceiling perimeter - is excluded at all times, even during the year-1 full-coverage window for leaks. JDH discusses this with the homeowner at the contract stage and recommends a separate interior finish-out scope or a homeowner-coordinated drywall finisher. The year-1 interior coverage applies to water-intrusion damage from a covered workmanship leak - not to install-impact cosmetic damage.

It's a layered warranty, not a single term. 10 years on the installation (covers leaks tied to defective product or VELUX-supplied flashing when installed per VELUX instructions). 20 years on the glass seal (against seal failure / fogging between panes). 10 years on the product (frame, sash, flashing - against defects in materials and workmanship). 5 years on solar components (panel, battery, motor) and on factory shades. All four overlap to give long-term coverage on every part of the unit. JDH is a certified VELUX Skylight Specialist installing with VELUX-supplied flashing - the requirement for the No Leak Promise to apply.

For active leaks, JDH provides temporary mitigation at no charge during the repair-waiting period.

Yes. JDH's 5-year workmanship warranty transfers in full to a subsequent homeowner for the remainder of the coverage period - no paperwork, no fee. The VELUX No Leak Promise transfers per VELUX's published terms (varies by warranty component; the 10-year installation coverage is tied to the unit, not the owner). When you list your home, share the install paperwork and VELUX warranty document with the buyer; Jessica Commodore at the JDH office can provide replacement copies if needed.

The most common voiders: third-party penetrations near the skylight (solar installer punching panels through nearby roof, satellite installer routing cables across, homeowner adding interior shades or controls) - though JDH offers a free post-third-party-work inspection to restore coverage; install of non-VELUX flashing components on a VELUX unit (voids the No Leak Promise); aftermarket motor or solar component replacements with non-VELUX parts; unauthorized modifications to the curb or flashing. Notably, missed routine maintenance does NOT void JDH's workmanship warranty. Acts of God (wind beyond manufacturer rating, hail damage to dome or glass, lightning, tree-strike) are excluded but route to insurance and VELUX's glass-seal coverage where applicable.

Depends on the cause. Normal interior condensation on the glass during cold weather due to room humidity differential is normal physics and not a workmanship or warranty issue - it routes to homeowner climate management (bath fan run-time, room ventilation, dehumidifier). Excessive recurring condensation that points to glass seal failure (moisture between panes, fogging that doesn't clear) routes to VELUX's 20-year glass seal coverage; JDH files the claim on your behalf during the 5-year workmanship window.
