Most roofers buy pre-cut standing seam panels from a manufacturer like Drexel, Englert, or McElroy in fixed lengths, then splice them across long runs. JDH rolls every panel on our own equipment from coil stock. The panel profile, gauge, finish color, and exact length are sized to your home before the roof crew sets foot on the deck. A standing seam roof on a proper deck is no louder than an asphalt shingle roof. The barn-roof myth comes from open-purlin barn installs where the metal panel sits on bare framing, not the deck-on-rafter assembly used in residential construction. The standing seam profile also damps panel resonance better than exposed-fastener; JDH installs standing seam only, so this is a non-issue on every JDH metal install.

No. Metal expands and contracts with temperature; asphalt does not. The dimensional conflict accelerates clip movement, panel scuff, and ice damming. Installing metal over asphalt also hides dimensional rot in the deck that the panel will eventually telegraph through. JDH strips to deck on every install so we can inspect the substrate, replace any compromised plywood, lay high-temperature ice and water shield, and seat the custom panels on a clean dry deck.

Standing seam at 24-gauge typically dents but does not leak from hail under 2 inches diameter. For hail-prone Maryland counties (Calvert, St. Mary’s, Charles, Anne Arundel), JDH recommends upgrading to 22-gauge for the additional impact resistance. The painted Kynar finish does not chip on impact; visible dents on a metal roof are a cosmetic concern, not a leak concern, and many carriers will fund a panel replacement at the dent count threshold even though the roof is still watertight.
