How long is JDH's siding workmanship warranty? +
JDH's siding workmanship warranty is 5 years from the install completion date, fully transferable to a new homeowner if you sell. The clock starts the last day JDH's crew performed work on the project - independent of final payment or post-install paperwork. Industry typical is 1 to 2 years non-transferable; JDH's 5-year transferable in-house warranty is among the strongest siding workmanship terms a Maryland or Virginia contractor offers. If JDH performs a covered repair during the 5-year window, that repair is covered for the remainder of the original window (the clock does not restart).
Is the James Hardie HZ5 warranty transferable? +
Yes. The HZ5 substrate warranty (30 years non-prorated) and ColorPlus finish warranty (15 years) both transfer once to the first subsequent owner. No homeowner registration is required - the warranty runs with the property automatically. JDH provides the buyer's home inspector with the install paperwork on request. Hardie's warranty is one of the strongest in fiber cement and a real selling-point disclosure when you list the property.
What is the difference between workmanship and material coverage on siding? +
Two distinct warranties run in parallel. Workmanship (JDH) covers how the siding was installed: fastening, lap alignment, flashing, sealing, WRB integration, trim, J-channel, penetrations - anything that traces to JDH's install labor. Material (manufacturer) covers product defects: Hardie HZ5 substrate against cracking, rotting, delamination, termite damage (30 years), Hardie ColorPlus finish against peeling, cracking, chipping (15 years), ProVia siding materials and workmanship (Lifetime Limited). JDH files manufacturer claims on your behalf during the 5-year window.
What does the ColorPlus finish warranty cover? +
James Hardie's ColorPlus Technology finish warranty is 15 years on paint plus labor against peeling, cracking, and chipping. ColorPlus is Hardie's factory-baked finish (applied at the manufacturing plant in a controlled environment) - dramatically more durable than field-applied paint. Normal color fade within Hardie's published spec is not a warranty claim; significant peel, crack, or chip outside normal weathering is. JDH files the Hardie ColorPlus claim on your behalf.
How do I file a siding warranty claim with JDH? +

For the first 5 years after install, JDH owns the claim regardless of which warranty technically applies; material-defect routes get filed with Hardie or ProVia on your behalf.
Does the siding warranty transfer if I sell my house? +
Yes. JDH's 5-year workmanship warranty transfers in full to a subsequent homeowner for the remainder of the coverage period - no paperwork, no fee. We document the install in a file the buyer's home inspector can verify. The Hardie HZ5 and ColorPlus warranties also transfer once to the first subsequent owner; the warranty runs with the property. ProVia siding's Lifetime Limited warranty transfers once to a subsequent purchaser per ProVia terms. Both transfers happen automatically with the property; the seller simply hands over the install paperwork and warranty document.
What voids my siding warranty? +
The most common voiders: third-party penetrations or alterations to the JDH-installed siding by another contractor (electrical adding fixtures, HVAC line sets, satellite installer, homeowner DIY shutters) - though JDH offers a free post-third-party-work inspection to restore coverage; pressure-washing at pressures or chemicals that damage the finish; unauthorized modifications or repairs by another contractor; substitution of non-Hardie or non-ProVia components; and damage to JDH-installed siding by other trades. Notably, missed routine maintenance (siding washing, caulk inspection) does NOT void JDH's workmanship warranty. Acts of God (wind beyond manufacturer rating, hail, lightning, tree-strike) are excluded but route to insurance.
Are interior repairs covered if a siding leak causes drywall damage? +
Year 1 only: yes, with no cap. Months 1-12 from install completion: if a covered workmanship leak causes drywall, paint, or finish damage inside, JDH restores the interior to pre-leak condition at no charge - no cap, no insurance routing. Months 13-60 (years 2-5): JDH does not cover interior repairs but will remove drywall at no charge to expose the wall cavity so the workmanship defect can be repaired and your insurance contractor can finish the interior restoration. JDH provides documentation to support the insurance claim.
