Roof Insurance Claims, HAAG Master Documentation + Carrier-Funded Scope
JDH supports Maryland and Virginia homeowners through every step of a roof insurance claim: free HAAG Master forensic inspection, adjuster-grade Xactimate-aligned photo documentation, and an inspector who meets your insurance adjuster on the roof. The claim funds whatever the documentation supports. We document wind damage, hail damage, fallen-tree impact, and storm-uplift failures for the carrier in the format they expect. Emergency tarp coverage is free when filing a claim. JDH does not act as a public adjuster, but we provide the documentation that lets you (or your adjuster) push for the right scope. MHIC #137491, VA Class A #2705192986, $8M insured.
How much does roof insurance claim documentation cost?
JDH's HAAG Master forensic inspection + insurance-claim documentation is free when you file the claim with us. We bill the carrier directly to the approved scope; homeowner out-of-pocket is typically the deductible only ($1,000 to $2,500). If the claim is denied or the damage is sub-deductible, we offer a non-insurance repair quote: targeted repair runs $1,200 to $4,800. Adjuster meeting on the roof is scheduled within 5-10 days of inspection. Most carrier-approved scopes fund the install within 2-4 weeks. If the damage triggers full replacement, see replacement cost.
Jim Dodson
A HAAG Master-level inspector since 2021 with adjuster-grade storm documentation experience, leading a third-generation roofing contractor founded in 1986. The 35% Rule on this page is the same written rule applied to every JDH estimate, viewed from the other direction. We recommend replacement when the repair would burn 35 percent or more of what a full Owens Corning Platinum system costs on this specific roof. The math is documented with the PCC Method and delivered as a Digital Analysis video so homeowners see the actual numbers before signing anything. We also write what we’ll not do, and why, on every quote.
What JDH documents on every storm response
Every JDH storm response includes the same documentation set: photo evidence, FLIR thermal, drone aerials, and a HAAG-trained inspector's read on the roof field. This is what insurance carriers expect and what makes the claim move. Skipping any one is how budget contractors hit a $3,999 price, and how you end up replacing the roof again in 12 years.
Same-day emergency tarp coverage
Active leak stopped with protective tarping within hours of your call. Free for homeowners filing an insurance claim with JDH (the carrier typically reimburses tarp cost as part of the approved scope). For non-insurance jobs, tarp runs $150-$400 and is credited toward the repair quote.
PCC deck inspectionHAAG Master forensic inspection
60-90 minute roof-level inspection with FLIR thermal, drone aerial, moisture meter, and HAAG shingle gauges. Distinguishes wind damage (lifted tabs) from hail damage (granule strike) from tree impact (deck compromise) so the carrier funds the right scope.
Why this mattersAdjuster-grade Xactimate documentation
Photo evidence + Xactimate-aligned scope written in the format your carrier expects. Adjuster meeting on the roof scheduled within 5-10 days. JDH does not act as a public adjuster, but we provide the documentation that supports the right scope.
Repair vs replaceWind damage scope (partial slope)
Lifted, creased, or missing shingles along ridges, valleys, and edges. JDH documents every lifted tab with the underlying nailing pattern. Most wind-damage claims fund a single-slope or partial-slope replacement; broader wind events fund a full roof replacement.
Verify OC PlatinumTree impact + deck assessment
Discrete impact zones often propagate beyond the visible damage. JDH walks the full surrounding field with the moisture meter and confirms deck integrity before scoping. Repair includes deck rebuild where needed, structurally documented for the carrier.
Ventilation auditClaim supplement + carrier-funded install
If the adjuster underscopes the damage, JDH submits a supplement in the same Xactimate format the original scope used. Most supplements get partial or full approval within 2-4 weeks. Once the claim is approved, JDH installs the Owens Corning Duration system to the scope funded.
Full replacement optionAfter a storm: when targeted repair makes sense, and when the carrier funds a full replacement.
Maryland and Virginia storms produce three damage signatures that trigger different responses. JDH documents which one you have so the carrier funds the right scope: targeted repair for isolated wind or impact damage, full slope replacement for widespread hail damage, or full roof replacement when the damage crosses our 35 percent threshold against replacement cost.
The three Maryland storm damage signatures and how JDH documents each:
- Wind damage (lifted or missing shingles). Often isolated to one or two slopes. JDH photographs every lifted tab, documents the underlying nailing pattern, and scopes a targeted repair when the field is otherwise sound. Most wind-damage claims fund a single-slope or partial-slope replacement.
- Hail damage (granule strike pattern). Tested with HAAG shingle gauges to confirm functional damage (not cosmetic). Hail damage typically covers wider area; documentation usually triggers a full-slope or full-roof replacement claim. Class 4 impact-rated Duration STORM shingles reduce future hail claims and often unlock a Maryland homeowner premium discount.
- Tree impact / collateral damage. Discrete impact zone with potential deck damage underneath. JDH walks the entire surrounding field because impact often propagates beyond the visible damage. Scope includes deck inspection and rebuild where needed.
How the insurance claim actually moves
JDH does not act as a public adjuster. We document storm damage in the format carriers expect (Xactimate-aligned scopes, code-compliant photo evidence, drone aerials when policy size warrants it) and meet your adjuster on the roof when the inspection is scheduled. Most carriers fund the scope JDH documents within 2-4 weeks of the inspection. We supplement underscoped claims with additional documentation but the homeowner remains in the driver's seat throughout.
If you have not filed a claim yet, JDH provides the documentation first so you can decide whether the damage is worth the deductible. If the damage is sub-deductible or denied, we offer a non-insurance repair quote.
The storm-chaser red flags. And what JDH does differently.
After a Maryland storm, out-of-state contractors flood neighborhoods with door-knockers offering "free roofs paid by your insurance." A few are legitimate. Most are storm-chasers who undermine the homeowner's position with their carrier and leave town. Six warning signs and the JDH alternative.
- Out-of-state contractor address. Storm-chasers operate from a national LLC that doesn't carry Maryland MHIC or Virginia DPOR. When the warranty issue surfaces in year 3, the entity is dissolved. JDH carries MHIC #137491 and VA Class A #2705192986, with a 39-year operating history.
- Pressure to sign before the adjuster inspects. Legitimate insurance work is approved by your carrier first, then contracted to the installer. "Sign this contingency agreement now so we lock you in" is a storm-chaser line. JDH provides documentation and a quote, no contingency contract.
- Offer to "eat the deductible." This is insurance fraud under Maryland and Virginia law. JDH bills the carrier the approved scope amount and bills the homeowner the deductible at install.
- No physical local office or registered crew. Storm-chasers subcontract local day-labor crews and supervise from a hotel. JDH crews are W-2 employees out of our Calvert County office.
- Shingle brand "you can pick later" or "any major brand." Owens Corning Platinum Preferred is a designation, not a sticker. JDH installs OC Duration on every claim-funded replacement. The brand is on the contract before the install.
- Workmanship warranty shorter than 5 years (or "lifetime" with no paperwork). Storm-chaser workmanship warranties are vapor when the entity dissolves. JDH's 5-year workmanship warranty is in writing and tied to JDH the company (39-year-old MHIC-registered entity).
None of this is a knock on out-of-state contractors generally – the price is real, the work happens, the roof gets shingled. But a storm claim is a one-shot at funding the replacement your roof needs. Our floor is higher because we’re pricing a 30-year system, not a 12-year cosmetic. See financing if budget is the actual concern; if your claim is denied or underscoped, JDH offers Hearth and GreenSky financing for the gap between claim funding and the actual cost of the right repair.

Roof Insurance Claim FAQ
The questions Maryland and Virginia homeowners ask before, during, and after filing a storm claim. More general roofing questions on the roofing FAQ.
My roof was damaged in a storm: what should I do first? +
Call JDH at (443) 241-7356 for emergency tarp coverage to stop any active leak. JDH provides free tarp coverage when you are filing an insurance claim. Then file the claim with your carrier within 60 days of the damage event. Request an adjuster inspection. JDH will meet the adjuster on the roof, document every finding in adjuster-grade photo format, and scope the repair to the standard your carrier expects. The whole process from first call to adjuster meeting typically takes 7-14 days.
How long do I have to file a storm damage claim in Maryland? +
Most Maryland and Virginia homeowner policies require notice within 60 days of the damage event. Some carriers extend to 1 year for the actual claim filing if notice is given within 60 days. Check your specific policy: the deadline is in the Conditions section, typically called "Notice of Loss" or "Prompt Notice." JDH's free inspection documents the damage so you have the evidence before the deadline.
Will my insurance cover a full roof replacement after storm damage? +
It depends on the damage signature. Widespread hail damage (granule strike across multiple slopes), full-slope wind damage, or major tree impact typically funds a full replacement. Isolated wind damage on one slope often funds a partial replacement. The carrier funds what the inspection documents. JDH's HAAG Master Certified inspectors produce the documentation that supports the claim at the actual scope of damage. The majority of approved storm claims at JDH fund either a full or partial replacement; isolated single-event damage is more often scoped as a targeted repair.
What is the difference between wind damage and hail damage? +
Wind damage shows as lifted, creased, or missing shingles, often along ridges, valleys, and roof edges. Hail damage shows as granule loss in a strike pattern (round or oval bruises on individual shingles), typically across broad sections of the roof field. HAAG-trained inspectors test suspected hail with shingle gauges to distinguish functional damage from cosmetic blemishes. Carriers fund different scope for each: wind typically partial-slope, hail typically full-slope or full-roof.
What if the adjuster underscopes the damage? +
JDH supplements underscoped claims with additional documentation. We submit the supplement to the carrier in the same Xactimate format the original scope used and reference the specific code requirements (Maryland Building Code or IRC) that justify the additional scope. Most supplements get partial or full approval within 2-4 weeks. JDH does not act as a public adjuster, but we provide the documentation that lets you or your public adjuster push for the correct scope.
Should I sign a contingency agreement with a storm-chaser contractor? +
No. A "contingency agreement" locks you into a contractor before your insurance approves the work, often with cancellation penalties. Out-of-state storm-chaser companies use them aggressively after Maryland storms. JDH does not require any contingency contract. We document the damage for free, you decide whether to file the claim, and you choose who installs the work after the carrier approves the scope. If a contractor pressures you to sign before the adjuster inspects, walk away.
Is emergency tarp coverage really free? +
Yes when you are filing an insurance claim with JDH. The carrier typically reimburses the tarp cost as part of the approved scope, and JDH covers the upfront cost so you do not pay out of pocket. For non-insurance jobs, tarp coverage runs $150 to $400 depending on roof size and is credited toward the repair quote if you move forward.
Will an insurance claim raise my premium? +
Most Maryland and Virginia carriers treat a single storm claim as a "weather-related event" that does not directly raise the policy premium (unlike a liability claim). However, multiple claims within 3 years, or a claim filed against a denied-storm scope (where the carrier disputes that the damage was storm-caused), can affect renewal pricing. JDH's documentation makes the storm-causation case explicit so the claim falls cleanly into the weather-event category.
