What Makes a JDH Inspection Different

JDH's roof inspection methodology is built on HAAG Master Level forensic standards - the same investigation framework insurance adjusters use to evaluate storm-damage claims.

Every inspection starts with drone imagery of the entire roof surface, then moves to a thermal scan of the attic with a FLIR camera to identify moisture infiltration points that are invisible from outside. Owner Jim Dodson holds HAAG Master Level certification (#992109047, earned 2021), and Inspector Manager Brian McClees holds the same. The inspection takes 60-90 minutes and produces a documented report - measurements, photos, thermal images, and a written summary of findings. The inspection is free; the report is yours to keep whether you hire JDH or not.

Most contractors do a "walk-and-talk" estimate: 10-15 minutes on the roof, a price written on a clipboard, no documentation. JDH's HAAG-certified approach exists because forensic documentation makes the difference between a quote that holds up after tear-off and a quote that gets blown apart by post-discovery change orders.

How Fixed Pricing Actually Works

JDH writes a fixed price before tear-off begins, and that price is the price you pay - no mid-job change orders for materials we should have spotted in the inspection.

Every roof replacement quote includes the full Owens Corning roofing system: Duration shingles, Deck Defense synthetic underlayment, DuraRidge ridge cap, ice and water shield at all eaves and valleys, drip edge replacement on the full perimeter, and four sheets of OSB decking. Additional sheets are $85 each, disclosed upfront on the quote - not a surprise after tear-off. County permits, when required, are pulled by JDH at a flat fee. The HAAG inspection identifies decking issues, ventilation problems, and flashing failures before the crew arrives, so the quote reflects the actual scope of work.

This is different from how most contractors price: lower walk-and-talk bid, "discovery" add-ons after tear-off ($1,200+ for layer two of shingles spotted late, $900+ for decking rot the inspector didn't check), and a final invoice 15-25% higher than the original quote. JDH's pricing model favors the homeowner who values predictability - not the homeowner shopping the lowest bid.

Why Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Matters

Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor status is held by less than 1% of US roofing contractors and is the only credential that unlocks the 50-year non-prorated Platinum Protection warranty.

JDH has held Platinum Preferred status since 2014 - 12 consecutive years at the top tier of Owens Corning's contractor program. The designation is reviewed annually based on installation volume, customer satisfaction surveys, and verified training. Platinum Protection coverage runs 50 years on materials, labor, tear-off, and disposal, with 25 years of full non-prorated workmanship coverage and 130 MPH wind coverage. The warranty is transferable once to a new homeowner. Standard Owens Corning warranties through non-Platinum contractors are 25 years prorated and do not include labor or tear-off.

The Platinum Protection warranty is only available when JDH installs four Owens Corning component products beyond shingles - typically Deck Defense underlayment, DuraRidge ridge cap, Owens Corning ice and water shield, and Owens Corning starter strip. JDH includes all four in every standard quote, which is why every JDH replacement qualifies for the upgrade.

When Storm Damage Calls for an Insurance Claim

JDH handles insurance restoration work using Xactimate estimating - the same software adjusters use - and the HAAG Master certification gives the inspection the same evidentiary standing as the adjuster's own report.

Storm damage in Maryland and Virginia is most common in late summer (June-September) and early winter (November-February). Hail bruising, wind-lifted shingles, and granule loss from hail impact are the three most common claim-eligible findings. JDH inspects free of charge whether or not you have an active claim; the inspection produces a documented report you can submit with your insurance claim. When the claim is approved, JDH works directly with the adjuster on scope alignment so you don't pay the difference between approved scope and actual repair cost.

Across all 2024-2026 work, JDH has completed insurance restoration in Calvert, Charles, St. Mary's, Anne Arundel, and Prince George's counties in Maryland, and in Stafford, Fredericksburg, and Spotsylvania counties in Northern Virginia. For homeowners with no claim, whose roof is simply at end-of-life, the same forensic inspection applies without the adjuster coordination step.
